Concept illustration

Original data branch into documented calculations and rendered presentations with a shared audit trail.
Conceptual file lineage: a palette screenshot is a rendered view, not a substitute for underlying measurement data. Diagram only; not flight-test data.
Read diagram notes
  • Acquired original data: Verify actual output content with the intended receiving tools.
  • Working calculation: Retain regions, parameters, software versions and processing steps.
  • Rendered presentation: Record palette, display range and annotations; link back to originals.
  • Reproducible handover: Inventory files and distinguish revised calculations from new observations.

A thermal handover can look complete while leaving the next analyst unable to reproduce a reported value. In this hypothetical civil project, a large fixed-wing UAV has recorded an industrial overview, but the delivered folder contains only palette screenshots in a presentation. The asset team needs to know whether measurement data still exist. This is a proposed integration review, not an GAUTEN deliverable or a claim about any specific installed camera.

Recorded measurement data and parameters

FLIR’s Boson and Boson+ radiometry guide distinguishes temperature-linear output from colorized output and describes controls for environmental measurement parameters. [6] This is a model-family example. It does not mean every thermal camera records the same output, uses the same conversion or preserves the same metadata.

Specify the exact file and stream requirements before acquisition. Ask the integrator to identify the camera model, enabled radiometric capability, recording path and software needed to examine an example. Do not accept the word thermal as a sufficient file-format description. Likewise, avoid assuming that a familiar filename extension proves the presence or absence of radiometric content.

For the proposed acceptance test, have the receiving team open an original sample using the intended tools and explain what each value represents. Keep camera output separate from later calculated temperature and presentation graphics. If the necessary output was never recorded, a more attractive report cannot retroactively create it.

Rendered palettes and display scaling

A palette screenshot should be treated as a rendered view unless its underlying measurement content is independently demonstrated. Request the display range, legend and any annotations needed to understand that view. Do not extract temperatures from a color patch and present them as recovered original measurements.

The Boson example is useful because its guide describes isotherms as customized colorization for defined ranges while retaining colorized output. [6] A highlighted region therefore needs a record of the settings that produced the highlight; the appearance alone does not establish a confirmed industrial defect.

In the hypothetical fixed-wing report, use presentation images to help the owner find an observation, not as the sole record supporting a quantitative claim. Link each view to the corresponding original file and region. If the display was adjusted to emphasize contrast, preserve that fact instead of implying all report images share one scale.

Original file preservation

Propose separate original, working and presentation directories. Preserve the acquired files without replacing them during report preparation, and record file-integrity checks when transferring the package. This is a proposed custody practice, not a claim that a particular file format has universal forensic properties.

Long fixed-wing campaigns also need an inventory that exposes missing segments. Request file identifiers, acquisition times, recording-mode changes and any known interruptions. An export should state which originals it represents. Do not let a polished site mosaic obscure the fact that part of the source sequence is absent or unusable.

If the asset team cannot access a proprietary format, resolve the handover method before closing the project. Require a documented route to inspect the evidence, while retaining the originals. A conversion can be useful, but its settings and limitations should remain attached rather than being treated as a transparent replacement.

Audit trail for later interpretation

USGS’s calibration guidelines emphasize including calibration parameters and their uncertainties in metadata so users can evaluate data suitability. [2] The principle applies to the proposed handover review without making the USGS report a thermal file-format specification.

For each reported value, retain the input file, interpreted region, measurement parameters, software revision and processing steps. If an analyst revises an assumption, keep the earlier result traceable. The recipient should be able to distinguish a new observation from a revised calculation or a change in display.

The correct deliverable depends on the asset team’s agreed use. A qualitative overview may legitimately include rendered images, provided its limits are explicit. A quantitative request needs the appropriate underlying data and exact camera documentation. Keeping those scopes separate prevents a large fixed-wing screening package from acquiring unsupported measurement claims after handover.
